  1. My book is called "My Personal Best - Life Lessons from an All-American Journey" by John Wooden, with Steve Jamison. The book is basically an autobiography of John Wooden's life and shares many stories of his struggles and how he fought through them and ended up triumphant in the end. Much of the book relates his lessons he has learned coaching on the basketball court to the real world. Wooden is recognized as one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time and has had several years of experience taking a leadership role for the many teams he has played and coached for. He is qualified to write a book on leadership because as they say - with age comes experience. John Wooden has experienced it all when it comes to leading a team or group. He has experienced several wins and losses (but mostly wins!), but learns from the losses in order to make his team that much better.

So far in my book, even after only reading about 25 pages, several very inspirational quotes from Wooden and his friends have come up. The main messages that Wooden is trying to convey so far are that trying your hardest in life is the key to success, and that the group you are in is more important than yourself or just one single person. This first message is shown by this famous quote by John Wooden's father Joshua - "Don't try to be better than somebody else, but never cease trying to be the best you can be". Others quotes along those lines that John Wooden preached to his players were "Try your hardest. Make the effort. Do your best", and also that "No player is bigger or better than the team".

  2. The i read was Fish my Stephan C. Lundin and by Harry Paul and John Christensen. It is about how this manager named Mary Jane Remirez who works for the First Guarantee Financial company is having problems with the third floor of the company. Her job is to find a way to turn the staff of the third floor into staff that the company can work effectively with the rest of the staff.
The authors are qualified to write a leadership book because they want the same results that managers dream of having, to have a happy, healthy, and enthusiastic staff whom the rest of the employees could build around in order to become a successful company.

  3. The book im reading is called Velocity, by Dean Koontz. Its about a man who has to choose between saving a young schoolteacher or and elderly woman involved in charity work, and he doesnt know either of these women. This book is fiction and written by one of the world's best selling authors. He has written 110 since 1968 in many different genres.

So far in the book its been about this man who is very arrogant and celebrates the death of his neighbor who died 4 years ago at least once a week. I dont think this man is the main character but the owner of the bar that the man goes to on a regularly basis. The bartender (Billy)is a very calm man who keeps to himself and when talking to a tourist in the bar, the tourist describes him as "a sponge because he takes everything in, but a stone because he gives nothing back," the tourist thinks billy life philosophy as: be self-sufficient, dont get involved, let the world go to hell if it wants.

  4. 1. My book is Wooden on Leadership. He was the coach of UCLA basketball for 28 seasons. It has been said that he is the most successfull NCAA basketball coach of all time. He is known as a huge leader, he is very respected and know's how to measure success.

    2. A major point that Wooden tries to get across is that winning is not the important thing. Success is measured by effort. He always strives for him and his team to do their best. He rarely ever mentioned the word "winning" or beating the other team the whole time he was coching, he wanted them to just go out there and give 100% "The player who gives his best is sure of success, while the player who gives less than his best is a failure. (Wooden, 17)"

  5. In my book "Finding Fish," I've only read 28 pages, and so far Antwone Fisher, the main character, has just been born. His parents didn't plan on having him- his mother was young and came from a poor family, and had to give the baby up for adoption. The father was a man named Eddie, who was "slick." He had many girls, so being with her was no big change for him. He was killed before the baby was born, so that strengthened her need to give the child up for adoption. Antwone ended up going to foster home after foster home, developing well, but his emotions were constantly toyed with when he was continuously taken away from his homes. That's as far as I got. The author is Antwone Fisher, and the book has yet to show me why he is qualified as a leader, only because he just came into the story. I don't want to research online about why he is qualified, because there was a movie made about this story and I know it'll spoil it for me. I'm thinking he is qualified because it sounds like he comes from a rough childhood, and from what I read on the back of the book, it sounds like he joins the Navy, which is a HUGE decision; members of the Navy, and any part of the US Military, are definitely leaders. They lead our country towards things, and lead each other through.

The author definitely is taking his time telling the reader of how life was around the time he was born. Here are some examples.

pg3 "The economy was thriving then thanks to the motor companies, the steel mills, tool-and-dye factories, and the other industries springing up across the landscape every which was but north, where the great, ominous expanse of Lake Erie is all that the eye can see.

pg4 "Friendly and small-town it could be, but Cleveland living was hardly easy. Like the weather and the work, the temperament was harsh."

The author also describes, in detail, his family members, before he was born:

p6, talking about his father's mother (or his grandmother)
"Over the years, as the lines of her body curved and widened, her position of authority was recognized not only in the family but within the community.

    p9, Emma's view on Eddie;
"But Eddie, he was like something extra-magic, like a person who could go out there and win, a person who could really be somebody. Somebody big int he world. An author or a poet."

  6. 1. My Book is about the life of Larry Bird. The book talks about his troubled past, his career and the basketball players he played with during his career. The author is Larry Bird & Bob Ryan and they are qualified to write this book because it's an autobiography and the author (Larry Bird) is talking about himself.

    2. So far in my reading, the author is explaining to the readers how he was introduced to basketball and how he enjoyed playing the game. He was introduced to the game of basketball when he was 13. Some random kid stopped him and asked him to play, and when he found out he was a natural at basketball everything in his life became about basketball. "I had only played a little basketball in junior high" "Even though I was playing against bigger kids that day, it seemed as if everything I lofted went in." "That was it. I was hooked on basketball"

  7. 1. My book is about the actions of a prince. it tells how kings should act in every situation.
The author is Nicolo' Macchiavelli, a famous Italian writer during the Rinascimento (1400-1500). When he was young he studied Latin, grammar and arithmetic. Later he studied politic and in 1498 he became chancellor. in 1500 he was sent by the Republic in France to keep good relationships. He had a politic career as chancellor and secretary for Firenze's governors. That is why he was qualified to write this book.

    2. In the first pages the main point that comes out is that the author tries to explain just the kings are able to judge the people and just the people can judge kings.

  8. My book is titled "You don't need a TITLE to be a Leader." So far its a good book, talking about how anyone anywhere can make a difference weather you have a title or not. Mark Sanborn is the President of Sanborn & Associates, Inc. its an idea studio dedicated to developing leaders in business and in life and an internationally known leadership development speaker and best selling author. Most people know him for his speaking on the topics of High Impact Leadership, Remarkable Performance, and Extraordinary Customer Service. I think he is qualified to write a book like this because he has a lot of leadership experience. Sanborn was the president of the National Speakers Association.

    2. 5 points. What are some of the major points that the author is trying to get across so far in your readings?
Be specific and cite a couple of examples from your early readings. Use quotes or direct lines from the reading to get your point across.

Sanborn focuses mostly on making a difference not just to customers or clients but anyone you encounter in your life. He uses a quote from the father of Alexander the Great. He said "An army of deer led by a lion is more to be feared than an army of lions led by a deer." Sanborn said that he thinks that he made a great point but he thinks that he missed the bigger point. He said that that he would have said An army of lions led by a lion is to be feared most of all, for it is unstoppable. I like this book because he takes other leaders quotes and makes them his own and makes them sound more like leadership.

  9. A major point the author tried to get across is that any business needs to function like the Pike Place Fish Market in order to be successful. One of the biggest things that Lonnie, one of the characters said was that " A company needs to have the courage to change." Another thing the author said which i couldn't quote was that a person chooses his or her attitude. A good example would a be character in the novel called Wolf. He was going to be the next best race car driver until he had a serious car accident. He went into serious self pity and the result of that was that his girlfriend left him and his friends also stopped seeing him. He later realized that he had an option to turn his life around and to change his attitude and that is exactly what he did.

  10. My book is called 50/50. It was written by a marathon runner named Dean Karnazes. The book is called 50/50 because Dean decides to run 50 marathons is 50 consecutive days! Holy cow!! He is a leader because he has inspired people to run with him. In his first of 50 marathons, a man runs the whole marathon side by side with Dean, telling him how inspirational he is. Dean felt like a hero until the last 100 yards of the marathon where the man collapsed and threw up everywhere. Throughout the remainder of the book, the author will tell us secrets he learned and how to achieve super endurance. Who doesnt like a good secret? I love you all

  11. My book is titled "The Essential Wooden" and is written by John Wooden and Steve Jamison. The book is about John Wooden, and his philosophy on leadership, winning, and success, as well as lessons he has learned throughout his 95 years of life. John Wooden is qualified to write this book because he has many accomplishments as a leader and coach which include: "10 March Madness national championships in 12 years; 7 national championships in a row; an 88-game winning streak; a 38-game winning streak in national championship tournament play; 12 Final Four appearances in 14 years; 4 'perfect seasons'"

One big point he has stressed in the first few pages is you should always lay to win, but winning doesn't necessarily mean success. John Wooden says "While I always play to win--always-- winning was never the way I measured my success. Nor was it how I gauged the success of those under my supervision." A former assistant coach of Wooden's said that "Coach Wooden was more upset if we won but didn't work up to our potential than if we lost playing our best." This says a lot about Coach Wooden, and the excellence he demanded.

  12. My book is about Hotel Rwanda and they guy that saved over 1,200 Rwandans by keeping them in his hotel. I think that Paul Resusabagina is qualified to write this book because he did an amazing job by keeping people safe, even though it put him at a lot of risk. The 1,200 people probably would have been slaughtered, but since Paul was brave enough to do what he did, he is a good person!

So far in the book, it talked a lot about the history of Rwanda. It talked a lot about Paul's childhood and how he was mixed Hutu and Tutsi. He grew up in a poor family and he was the first in his family to go to school, so it stresses a lot about family and education. It also stresses a lot about the importance of hospitality in the Rwandan culture, and how no matter who the person is, you should welcome them into your house. ANd that is just what Paul did with his hotel.

  13. my book is called "Eddie Would Go" by Stuart Holmes Coleman; who has had numerous interviews with the Aikau family(Eddie's family.) It's about a famous surfer/lifeguard from the North Shore in Hawaii. He was the first and most famous lifeguard on the North Shore. But he is most famous for sacrificing his life to save the crew aboard the voyaging canoe; the Hokule'a. The Hokule'a is a voyaging canoe that set out for the first time in 1975 on the same journey that the Polynesians traveled on their way to find what is now Hawaii.
"Hero's die hard." is a quote from this book, it is pretty self explanatory what it means and what Coleman is trying to say about Aikau and how he is a hero along with many things.

  14. 1. My book is called "Always Looking Up" by Michael J. Fox. The actor in fact. He is great actor and loves what he does until one day he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. That is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. So it makes his nerves in his legs and arms and pretty much his whole body just shake or lose feeling. So since he wasn't able to control it durring his acting career, he was unable to be apart of his movies. That pretty much screwed up his career. Then he went in and got it checked out and learn more about it... After he got used to it and started take pills to control it he was able to start his career again. Although he still didn't do too much and over do it. But the leadership part of this is that he didn't let it take over everything and just give up on everything, he just got it taken care of and was right back into what he loved to do.

    2. I think that he is trying to tell people that you shouldn't just give up when something bad happens. Learn to over come it and go back to what your great at.

  15. 1. The book I’m reading is called The Tipping Point and is by Malcolm Gladwell. It gives many separate examples of how little things can make a big difference, for instance the outbreak of the “hushpuppy shoe” and how contagious yawning is. The author of this book is a former science writer at the Washington Post and is currently a staff writer for The New Yorker.

    2. So far in my book the author has stressed that sometimes choices that seem to be small and insignificant are what bring about the largest changes. The author begins in the introduction by talking about a classic American shoe brand Hush Puppies. The shoe sold well for quite some time once it was first put on market but never reached the popularity intended. Finally somewhere between 1994 and 1995 when the company was at an all time low it took one person to wear these shoes to catch popularity and become the hottest item on the market.
